Backpacking in Yosemite - Ten Lakes

September 2015

Location: Yosemite National Park, Ten Lakes Trail

Duration: 1 Night, 2 Days

Length: 8 Miles round trip

Rating: 5 Stars

Difficulty: Moderate (Fairly level until the last couple miles before Ten lakes)

My husband and I sometimes need a spontaneous trip to the mountains to recharge after weeks of working non-stop. Luckily San Luis Obispo is not too far from one of the World's most incredible spots...Yosemite National Park.

For us, true relaxation comes from being away from technology, being surrounded by nature, and being away from people. Therefore, for this trip to be successful, we needed a location away from the Valley Floor. We decided to take a gamble and go head to the Info Desk and ask for a first come, first serve spot along the Tioga Road (added bonus of not having to pay the camping fee). A Ten Lakes reservation was available, so off we went.

Our trip happened to coincide with the Rough Fire which made the views for the first couple miles fairly faint and smokey. Though the pine forests and jagged formations that can be found all around the Park, never disappoints.

The trail had a steady, easy climb up to the Half Moon Meadow (a great spot for lunch or a snack). From there the climb picks up quite a bit until you reach the over pass. Trust me, this climb is worth it, allowing you to overlook the Grand Canyon of the Tuolomne River and the Ten Lakes.

Once to the top, several switchbacks (I think I counted 30+) take you down to the Ten Lakes campsite. After poking around quite a bit for a quiet campsite, we found the perfect spot with a great view of the lake...and vantage point of the Milky Way.

After our delicious mashed potatoes and summer sausage dinner, tea, and star gazing, we enjoyed an incredibly quiet sleep. In the morning we drank our coffee in our Grand Trunks hammock, admiring the morning sun by the lake. All in all, a great overnight trip!
